Artist’s statement: Looking to the Future is a portrait of a little girl who lives near the village of Saut d’Eau, in the vicinity of a waterfall which is sacred for Catholics and Vodou believers alike. Her mother cooks and sells food on the main road, leading to the waterfall. The picture was taken in January of 2020.
Ildiko Tillmann is an author and documentary photographer. She was born and raised in Hungary, and is currently based in the U.S. Her written and photographic work sets the goal to emphasize our shared humanity, and focuses on motherhood, love, strength and revolution, themes that have relevance across borders and cultural lines. Over the past two years she has been working on a freelance, narrative documentary project in Haiti, titled Lives in Revolution. The project combines writing and photography to take the reader beyond media headlines and offer an intimate portrait of life as lived in Haiti. Lives in Revolution sets an alternate frame to tell stories from Haiti, one that challenges the mainstream media representation of Haitians as quintessential victims. It aims to reach empowerment through centering resilience and hope.
Her previous publications include The Columbia Journal, The Caribbean Writer, The Caribbean Quarterly, The Haitian Times and Wadabagei – a Journal of the Caribbean.
